Recreating some of the social graces of 19th century Spain, this composition sets two Spanish ladies, attired in Manila shawls and traditional mantillas, on an embellished balcony, where they discreetly air their charms before gallant suitors strolling past. The damsels' intentions may well be revealed to the gallant passers-by through a secret fan language. The scene faithfully recalls the details that inspired the best works of the 19th-century painter Julio Romero.
